I can’t get the german special characters to show in XBMC’s EPG with XVDR.
I always get a “?” char.
I try to set LANG to de_DE.UTF-8 in runvdr start script, but does not help.
For very try i resetted the PVR and EPG database.
Also checked the epg.data file were vdr stores the EPG data -> if i open this file with notepadd++ i can see all char as they should be, so i guess the basis are ok.What can i try else to make it work?
December 31, 2011 at 08:25 #2430new iso : http://download.openbricks.org/geexbox-devel-20111230-r13719-i386.iso
- update xbmc-vdr
- problem with special caractère in epg displayed as “?” fixed
- added eglibc-gconv-extra for subtitles
- added extra-font-non free for subtitlesdon’t forget to do a scan before using the vdr addon (see previous post) and reboot
December 31, 2011 at 13:57 #2442Sorry to say, but the VDR/XBMC issue with spcial chars is NOT solved.
Whether in channel name nor in EPG.January 1, 2012 at 02:33 #2451No more problem for me …

January 1, 2012 at 04:48 #2456It is not a font issue, cause the xbmc menus also contain german special chars which are displayed corretly.
I have found the replacement char “?” for german chars like ä,ü,ö also in xbmc.logJanuary 1, 2012 at 05:08 #2460hum, did you change your locale seting in /etc/locale.conf ?
January 1, 2012 at 08:27 #2467sure
January 1, 2012 at 08:40 #2468ok, can you remove in /usr/bin/runvdr line containing the override for german people
than restart vdr.service , clean epg data in xbmc
does it change something ?
btw, i have all letters with “é e ö,” etcJanuary 1, 2012 at 09:32 #2470i think i got it:
Geexbox vdr allways creates epg.data with charset=iso-8859-1 -> whatever you set as LANG or LC_XXX.
I would of course pefer that files are created as utf8, but the solution or better the work around is to set LANG in /etc/locale to “de_DE.iso885915″, then i have all german chars in XBMC!@Tom: can you plz check the charset of your epg.data file (file -i [filename])?
If yours is also iso-8859-1 then can you plz find out why geexbox does not write file in utf8?
I checked against my vdr installion on my ubuntu 11.10 server -> there i have a epd.data with utf8 charset.

Cant wait for your answers
January 1, 2012 at 11:23 #2480sorry was away from home : result charset=utf-8
Have you tested what i ‘ve proposed :
stop vdr.service
remove in /usr/bin/runvdr line containing the override for german people
remove /video/epg.data
than restart vdr.service , clean epg data in xbmc
does it change something ?-

January 1, 2012 at 12:36 #2482Sure, makes no different, and guess why:
(taken from mount command output:)
/dev/sdc1 on /.root type vfat (rw,relatime,fmask=0022,dmask=0022,codepage=cp850,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,utf8,errors=remount-ro)Seems that if geexbox mounts all fat32 file-systems with iocharset=iso8859-1 !!!
I think it is on you to chance something in geexbox.
What i heard is that if you use utf8 with fat32 you get a warining from linux like this:
“FAT: utf8 is not a recommended IO charset for FAT filesystems,
filesystem will be case sensitive!”So maybe someone from geexbox team set this mounting default for fat32 with iocharset=iso8859-1 by intention.
And if this is the case then i think you mod maybe the vdr start script, or maybe try to mount the file-systems with utf8.I check more and get back to you.
